EPD’s Air, Land and Watershed Protection Branches, in concert with its seven District Offices, serve the public by implementing state laws, rules, and policies to protect human health and the environment; apply and enforce environmental laws and standards in a consistent, fair, and timely manner; and are proactive, results-oriented, and help develop new approaches to meet Georgia’s environmental challenges. Land Protection Branch (Atlanta Metro) The Land Protection Branch (LPB) manages the permitting, inspection, compliance, investigation, remediation, and corrective action activities for solid waste facilities, recycling facilities, scrap tires, underground storage tanks, surface mines, and hazardous waste facilities. The Branch oversees state and federal regulatory frameworks including RCRA, CERCLA, HSRA and the Solid Waste and Hazardous Waste Trust Funds. The Land Protection Branch also oversees the redevelopment and return to productive use of property through programs like Brownfields, Underground Storage Tank Management, and Georgia’s Voluntary Remediation Program. Duties and Responsibilities Under supervision, studies the composition, structure and other physical aspects of the earth. Examines minerals, underground water, waste disposal, land reclamation or other environmental problems to determine physical and chemical properties to ensure quality standards. Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: Assembles, operates, and maintains field and laboratory testing, measuring and mechanical equipment; collects and prepares solid and fluid samples for analysis. Conducts ground water/surface water and methane monitoring system inspections; audits field sampling techniques. Evaluates site investigations and remediation system design for petroleum releases from storage tanks and pipeline facilities. Identifies risks for natural disasters such as mud slides and provide advice on ways in which potential damage can be mitigated. Inspects construction projects in order to analyze problems, applying geological knowledge and using testing equipment and drilling machinery. Locates and estimates probable natural gas, strata, mineral deposits, underground water resources using charts, research and survey results. Performs studies of bridge foundations, soil surveys, and retaining walls; prepares related reports. Plots information from aerial photographs, well logs, section descriptions, and other databases. Field work and occasional overnight travel may be required. Based on education and experience, the selectee will be hired into one of the job codes below. Salary is commensurate with education and experience in compliance with State Personnel Board Rules. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS LSP050 – Geologist 1 Entry Salary $49,000.00 Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Geologic Sciences or a related field from an accredited college or university LSP051 – Geologist 2 Entry Salary $53,700.00 Master's degree in geology from an accredited college or university OR Bachelor's degree in geology, geologic sciences, or a related field from an accredited college or university AND Two years of related experience OR One year of experience required at the lower level Geologist 1 (LSP050) or position equivalent LSP052 – Geologist 3 Entry Salary $58,870.00 Master's degree in geology from an accredited college or university AND One year of related experience OR Bachelor's degree in geology, geologic sciences, or a related field from an accredited college or university AND Three years of related experience OR One year of experience required at the lower level Geologist 2 (LSP051) or position equivalent By applying to this requisition, you are applying to a pool and you will be considered for all vacancies within the stated job series and branch.
