Position Information Class Code: B035C Grade: GS09 FLSA Status: EXEMPT Salary Range: $50,222.00 - $72,822.00 Summary The Geology Supervisor is responsible for directing the activities of a geology section. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy. Functions Supervises a small professional staff by interviewing and recommending for hire, by assigning and reviewing work, and evaluating the performance of incumbents. . Provides oversight for geological, geochemical, geohazards, and geophysical field studies and surveys, sample collection and drilling, and testing programs used to collect data for research and application. Coordinates the planning and preparation of geological maps, cross-sectional diagrams, charts, reports, and publications pertaining to geologic resources, using the results of field work, laboratory, and literature research. Identifies geologic risks and provides advice on ways in which geologic damage from environmental or geohazards can be mitigated. Initiates and oversees research projects that identify potential resources of natural gas, oil, coal, minerals, and ground water, using aerial photographs, charts, research, and survey results. Performs other duties as assigned. Dimensions Frequent in-state travel is required. Occasional overnight and/or out-of-state travel may be required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of state laws and regulations pertaining to geological activities. Knowledge of geology theories and practices. Knowledge of the methods and techniques for conducting petroleum, mineral, and water surveys, tests, and analyses. Knowledge of mineral identification, geologic mapping, and geologic laboratory procedures and instrumentation. Knowledge and proficiency of GIS and geology software. Ability to assign and coordinate work activities and monitor the performance of co-workers and/or subordinates. Knowledge of supervisory practices and techniques. Ability to write technical reports, geological publications, and make verbal and written presentations to the public. Ability to conduct geological investigations and to conduct independent scientific research. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Minimum Qualifications The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in geology or a related field; plus four years' experience in geology, including two years in a supervisory or leadership capacity. Registered as a Professional Geologist by the Arkansas State Board of Registration for Professional Geologists. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management.
